With the premium GBS by the Sea’s office tower, developed by Penang Development Corporation (PDC), nearing completion and preparing for tenant occupancy, M.E.I Consultants Sdn. Bhd. (MEI) —a Lead Consultant for the project—seized the opportunity to bridge the gap between academia and industry. This initiative provided final-year engineering students from USM Engineering Campus, specifically those taking the air conditioning course, with invaluable exposure to real-world engineering practices. This experience enhanced their understanding of industry standards and better prepared them for their future roles as practicing engineers.

During the technical visit, students gained firsthand experience with the building’s critical facilities, including :
Chiller Plant room – the heart of the HVAC system, where they observed large-scale cooling operations.
AHU room – where air handling units regulate indoor thermal comfort.
Other M&E facilities – such as fire protection systems and emergency power systems, which are essential for life
safety in modern buildings.

Beyond technical insights, the visit also provided a valuable networking opportunity. Students engaged with representatives from leading industry players such as AMD, Celestica, and Microsoft, all tenants of the GBS by the Sea. To further enrich the experience, the client’s representatives and the project’s main contractor, Muhibbah Engineering (M), delivered insightful presentations on their companies and career opportunities, offering students a clearer path to future employment in the industry.
